Books on Screen: Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn

DDED9DDD-9BFD-4A1E-B810-1721E2C92ED5I’m super excited for an upcoming television miniseries, based on one of my favorite books: “Sharp Objects” by Gillian Flynn – yes, that Gillian Flynn.

It premiered yesterday on HBO, will air Sunday’s at 9 p.m. and looks amazing, though since I don’t have HBO I’ll have to wait until it comes out on DVD or Netflix to check it out. But I wanted to give you guys a heads up in case you do have HBO and would like to check it out. This book was one of the most suspenseful, creepy novels I’ve ever read, and this looks like it is pretty faithful to the text.

Here’s a sneak peak. If you do check it out, let me know how it is!

And if you’re a “read the book first” type of person, don’t hesitate to read this one.

I LOVED Mindy Mejia’s “Everything You Want Me to Be,” and am super excited to read her next novel, “Leave No Trace.”  Here’s a small sneak peek!

I glanced at the bed and pretended to think as I searched Lucas’s face where dark bruises began to ring his eye sockets. My stomach pitched.

This week I’m looking forward to digging into “Let Me Lie,” which has a really intriguing summary. I’m looking forward to reading a good psychological thriller, so hopefully this fits the bill!

Here we go:

Too late I bite my tongue. Billy turns away, but not before I’ve seen the hurt on his face. I stand helplessly for a while, looking at the back of his head and trying to say sorry, but the words won’t come.

After several intense thrillers, I decided to try something lighter in tone. I am a huge an of Sophie Kinsella, so I am excited to get to read her latest! Here’s a little peak:

I’m baffled. Isn’t she even going to try to sell me the chopper thing? She seems to have been utterly derailed, and I can’t work out why.

This week I’m just beginning “The Broken Girls” by Simone St. James. This book has great reviews so far, so I’m excited to get it started and see how I like it.

There was a chill of foreboding running through Fiona’s blood. She stared at the men, gathered with their heads together, their postures tense and distressed.

About the Book

Vermont, 1950. There’s a place for the girls whom no one wants–the troublemakers, the illegitimate, the too smart for their own good. It’s called Idlewild Hall. And in the small town where it’s located, there are rumors that the boarding school is haunted. Four roommates bond over their whispered fears, their budding friendship blossoming–until one of them mysteriously disappears. . . .

Vermont, 2014. As much as she’s tried, journalist Fiona Sheridan cannot stop revisiting the events surrounding her older sister’s death. I am about 1/5 of the way into the Chalk Man this week. It’s been great so far! I hope it continues this way!

“The playground was empty. We sat on the roundabout, bikes slung on the ground. Now that adrenalin was fading, my head throbbed. My hair was sticky with blood.”

About the Book

You can feel it in the woods, in the school and in the playground; you can feel it in the houses and at the fairground. You can feel it in most places in the small town of Anderbury . . . the fear that something or someone is watching you.

It began back in 1986, at the fair, on the day of the accident. That was when twelve-year-old Eddie met Mr Halloran – the Chalk Man.

He gave Eddie the idea for the drawings: a way to leave secret messages for his friends and it was fun, until the chalk men led them to a body.

Thirty years later, Ed believes the past is far behind him, until an envelope slips through the letterbox. It contains a stick of chalk, and a drawing of a figure.

Is history going to repeat itself?

Was it ever really over?

Will this game only end in the same way?

About the Book
They called themselves “the lucky ones.” They were seven children either orphaned or abandoned by their parents and chosen by legendary philanthropist and brain surgeon Dr. Vincent Capello to live in The Dragon, his almost magical beach house on the Oregon Coast. Allison was the youngest of the lucky ones living an idyllic life with her newfound family…until the night she almost died, and was then whisked away from the house and her adopted family forever.

Now, thirteen years later, Allison receives a letter from Roland, Dr. Capello’s oldest son, warning her that their father is ill and in his final days. Allison determines she must go home again and confront the ghosts of her past. She’s determined to find out what really happened that fateful night–was it an accident or, as she’s always suspected, did one of her beloved family members try to kill her?

But digging into the past can reveal horrific truths, and when Allison pieces together the story of her life, she’ll learns the terrible secret at the heart of the family she once loved but never really knew.

A vivid and suspenseful tale of family, grief, love—and the dark secrets that bind everything together—Tiffany Reisz’s latest is enthralling to the final page.
